Brian’s picks – June 23

Sure there are fireworks, but expect much more than that at QMIX Radio’s annual summertime extravaganza, Columbus Regional Health Presents QMIX Musical Fireworks 27, “Star Spangled Night,” at the Columbus Municipal Airport on July 1. The free show is wonderful, but almost as good are the food vendors, the people watching, the wide-eyed youngsters and the idea that a burst of patriotic sparkle is as beautiful as ever. Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. Fireworks boom at 10 p.m.

Get out. Outside, that is. The first free Donner Park Variety Show of the season unfolds from 7 to 9 p.m. June 25 at the Donner shelter house near 19th and Lafayette streets in Columbus. Jazz Inc. from Columbus East High School will open the show. Also on tap are Jalen Peak, a guitarist from Columbus East High School, and vocalist and guitarist Craig Thayer. The headliner is Seymour-based Elements of Jazz, offering tunes ranging from jazz standards to Frank Sinatra.
