3 injured in 4-vehicle accident

Three people were injured in a four-vehicle accident in the 4800 block of East State Street.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the accident at about 3:35 p.m. Monday, deputies said.

Accident investigators believe a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville driven eastbound by Ryan Mitchell, 18, Dupont, crossed the centerline of the street, causing his driver’s side to collide with the driver side of a westbound 2011 Kia Forte, driven by Floyd Smith, 58, North Vernon, deputies said.

The collision caused Smith’s vehicle to spin into oncoming eastbound traffic and into the path of a 2011 Toyota RAV-4 driven by Kevin Wiley, 41, Holton, deputies said. A 2000 Honda Accord driven by Olivia Pavy, 19, Bloomington, collided with Mitchell’s vehicle as it passed her vehicle, deputies said.

Smith, Wiley and a passenger in the Kia, Jacob Cockerman, 30, North Vernon, were transported to Columbus Regional Hospital, deputies said. Cockerman and Wiley were later transferred to Indianapolis hospitals for treatment.

Mitchell and Pavy said they were not injured and declined medical treatment at the scene.

Columbus Regional Hospital emergency medical services and Columbus Fire Department assisted at the accident scene.
