Hours-long wait for fresh peaches? Not out of line

Columbus residents were in a peachy mood Thursday afternoon as they stood in line for more than an hour waiting to pick up a box of fresh Georgia peaches from the traveling Peach Truck.

The Peach Truck, based out of Nashville, Tennessee, travels throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee to deliver Georgia peaches fresh off the tree.

A semi-trailer packed with boxes of peaches rolled into the parking lot of the Columbus Rural King store, where hundreds of residents lined up for the fresh fruit.

The line outside of Rural King extended from the store’s main entrance all the way out to National Road. Local resident Julie Pruitt said she waited in line from about 2:30 to 4 p.m. to pick up her two boxes, a wait she said was worth it because of the fresh taste.

Most grocery stores pick their peaches off the tree before they ripen, but The Peach Truck allows the fruit to ripen on the tree before being picked, which creates a richer peach taste, said Matthew Pond, a Peach Truck employee. Plus, Pond said the Peach Truck sells produce that is only two days off the tree, while most grocery stores sell fruit that has been off the tree for a month.

Pruitt said she plans to use her 50-pound purchase of peaches to entertain her friends and family during a Fourth of July celebration this weekend.
