John W. Blackburn, 96, of Fairview Drive, died at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2016, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

John was born May 16, 1920, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Lonnie and Lula Mae Dixon Blackburn. He married Dorothy M. Neat July 17, 1941.

John was a construction worker and was a member of the Laborer’s Union Local No. 741 for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing pranks on people. When John was younger, he enjoyed coon hunting with his coon dogs and working with his work mules.

The funeral will be conducted at 11a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Fields and the Rev. Jim Stump officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 4, 2016, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice of charities through the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Blackburn of Columbus; daughters, Mary (Ken) Bowling of Columbus and Alice (Jim) Palmer of Louisville; a son, Bill (Brenda) Blackburn of Columbus; grandchildren, Fred (Tina) Cave, Kenneth (RueAnn) Cave, Angie (Jimmy) Adair, Donna (Daymond) Jordon, Tamara (James) Cave, Shane (Amanda) Blackburn, Shannon (Max) Bullington, Trisha (Gary) Rudd and Jenna Luken; 22 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, George Bottoms of Jeffersonville, Indiana; and sisters, Luria Jenkins of Shelbyville and Joyce Walls of Rockford, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Lula Mae Dixon Blackburn; a son, Bobby Blackburn; grandchildren, Terry Burton and Jeremy Luken; sisters, Elenor and Jeston Neat; and brothers, Charles, Thomas and Joe Blackburn.

Services were entrusted to the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
