Louis E. Bense Jr., 85, of Hope, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Hope.

He had worked as a farmer in Bartholomew and Decatur counties before retirement. He was a member and a deacon at Waynesburg Christian Church and loved fishing, hunting, traveling and woodworking.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Pastor David Burnett officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to service time Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery.

Born in Bartholomew County July 5, 1930, Louis was the son of Louis Sr. and Anna Louise Gelfius Bense. He married Janet Dailey July 6, 1948, in Columbus, and she survives.

Other survivors include children, Brenda (David) Shireman of Hartsville, Wanda (Steve) Fortner of Hartsville and Debbie (Mike) Cox of Hope; grandchildren, Jeff (Andrea)  Elliott of Rochester, Indiana, Michelle (Bob) Sackett of Greensburg, Kevin Elliott of Hartsville, Beth (Kevin) AmRhein and Justin (Ashley) Shireman, both of Westport, Glendon (Sarah) Cox of Greensburg and Morgan Cox of Hope; great-grandchildren, Kristen Miller, Nicholas Elliott, Evan Elliott, Madalyn Shireman, Jaxon Shireman, Braden AmRhein and Ian AmRhein; sister, Dorothy (Morris) Beck of Franklin, Indiana; and a son-in-law, Charles Elliott.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beverly Elliott; and brother, Kenneth Bense.
