Betty J. Smith, 83, of Millhousen, passed away at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at the residence of her son in Columbus.

She was born July 31, 1932, in Nebraska, Indiana, the daughter of John and Florence (Barmes) Bundren. Betty spent the majority of her life residing in Millhousen, other than a three year time span in California and Maryland. She retired as the director of human services of Decatur County after 23 years of service. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Millhousen, Decatur County Chamber of Commerce, Greensburg Senior Center, Local Planning Council of Welfare to Work, Healthy Families, Project Help, Local Emergency Planning Council, Step Ahead, Salvation Army Unit Representative for Decatur County and the Cheer Fund. Betty had graduated from North Vernon High School and was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy “W.A.V.E.S.” from 1952 until 1954.

She married Arthur L. Smith Sr. on June 5, 1954, San Francisco, California, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 2000.

She is survived by four daughters, Aloha Flaherty of Westport, Jane Ann Melton of Greensburg, Anita Marie Patton of Scipio and Charity Brook Smith of Westport; two sons, Thomas Allen Smith of Columbus and Arthur Lloyd Smith Jr. of Greensburg; a brother, Harry Bundren of Westport; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Vera Hoffman, Emma Clark and Helen Cornwell; and a brother, Jesse Bundren.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with sister Donna Prickel officiating. Burial will follow at Rockcreek Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2016, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
