Black Lives Matter organizers launch effort

A mixed-race group of young adults in Columbus is moving forward with plans to launch a local chapter of Black Lives Matter.

Organizer Brittany King said the group has established a general email address, [email protected].

The group’s next step is finding a place to conduct meetings, King said. The first one likely will be later this month at a date to be determined, she said.

Angel Thomas said a local group definitely is needed. She is black, but emphasizes that everyone should care about equality.

“I have white friends who are finally getting their ah-ha moment. It doesn’t mean they are racist, but there’s no communication between communities (of races),” Thomas said.

The international organization lists 38 chapters in North America, with most chapters in metro areas, according to its website, blacklivesmatter.com. The only other chapter in Indiana is in Gary.
