North golfer qualifies for match-play tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE — Drew Smith carded rounds of 80 and 75 Monday and Tuesday to tie for 30th in stroke play and qualify for the match-play tournament in the Boys State Junior Championship.

Smith, who will be a sophomore at Columbus North, is the No. 33 seed and will play No. 32 seed Will Kirchmer of Fishers in this morning’s Round of 64 at Purdue’s Kampen Course.

Matt Vorndran, who will be a senior at North, tied for 64th after rounds of 80 and 81 but missed the cut on a tiebreaker. Spencer Fairbanks, who also will be a senior at North, tied for 89th with rounds of 83 and 87.

North graduates tied for 56th in Indiana Open

FRENCH LICK — Columbus North graduates Michael VanDeventer and Ian Coffey carded identical rounds of 74 and 76 Monday and Tuesday and are in a tie for 56th place at the midway point of the Indiana Open Championship at French Lick’s Donald Ross Course.

Ian Smith, also a North graduate, did not make the cut. He finished in a tie for 111th after rounds of 80 and 77.
