East boys swimmers can get pool time, work out

The Columbus East boys swim team will have open weightroom sessions from 7 to 8 a.m. and open pool sessions from 8 to 9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through the end of July. Swimmers can report to the pool area.

Central Middle School announces key dates

Central Middle School has announced dates for summer conditioning, open gyms, tryouts and first practices for fall sports.

Football conditioning will continue from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Practice will begin from 3:15 to 5 p.m. July 25.

Cross-country conditioning will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Aug. 1 at the school. Practice will begin from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. Aug. 3.

Volleyball open gyms will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday for seventh-graders and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and July 25 and 26 for eighth-graders. Tryouts are from 4 to 6 p.m. July 25 to 27 for seventh-graders and 3 to 5 p.m. July 27 to 29 for eighth-graders.

Boys tennis tryouts will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Aug. 2 to 4 at the Donner courts. Girls tennis tryouts will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 to 4 at the Donner courts.

For all sports, a physical dated April 1 or later must be turned in prior to tryouts or practice.

Jennings Middle School practices set to begin

Jennings County Middle School football, boys and girls soccer and cross-country practices will begin Monday. Football will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the middle school field, soccer will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Sand Creek Elementary, and cross-country will be from 6 to 7 p.m. at Muscatatuck County Park.

Volleyball tryout practices will begin from 4 to 6 p.m. July 25 at the middle school.

For all sports, a physical dated April 1 or later and a concussion form must be turned in prior to tryouts or practice. Concussion testing will be available from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday in Rooms 20 and 21 of the middle school.

Lacrosse clinic, drop-in sessions are available

The Columbus Lacrosse Club is conducting drop-in sessions Wednesdays at Central Middle School. Players going into grades 4 to 8 will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and players going into grades 9 to 12 will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The sessions will be supervised, and instruction will be provided. If it is raining within a half- hour of the start of a session, it will be canceled. Cancellations will be posted on Facebook.

Also, Hoosier Lacrosse will host a clinic from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central for boys entering Grades 4 to 12. Cost is $25. The session will focus on defense and goalies.

Coach conducting free softball clinics for girls

Veteran softball coach Eddie Loweth is conducting free softball clinics for girls on Thursdays at Northside Middle School. Grades 2 and younger will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and Grades 3 to 6 will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The clinics focus on hitting, baserunning, pitching, fielding and throwing. Girls should bring a bat, helmet and glove.

East boys basketball to hold fundraiser outing

The Columbus East Men’s Basketball Sixth Annual Golf Outing will be at noon Friday at Timbergate Golf Course. Registration begins at 11 a.m.

Cost is $400 per team and includes food prior to the round and a chance at prizes, including a new car for a hole-in-one. Proceeds will support the East Basketball Fund.

Ritz Memorial to benefit hockey players in need

The Columbus Youth Hockey Bryan Ritz Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing will be at 1 p.m. July 27 at Otter Creek.

Cost is $125 for an individual or $400 for a foursome, with dinner included, or $35 for dinner only. Sponsorships also are available. Proceeds will help give economically disadvantaged children the opportunity to become acquainted with hockey through the house league or continue to develop through the travel team program.

Northside tennis to host clinic, meeting, tryouts

Northside boys tennis will host a “Fun Tennis Clinic” for boys entering Grades 7 or 8 at Northside or St. Bartholomew schools from 4:45 to 6 p.m. July 27 to 29 at the Lincoln Park courts.

Players should bring a racket and water bottle. It is not a requirement to attend the clinic to try out for the team.

There will be a brief informational meeting about Northside boys tennis at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 2 at Northside, prior to the open house that begins at 6:30 p.m.

Tryouts for the team will be from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Aug. 3 and 4 and, if needed, Aug. 5 at Lincoln Park. Players need to have a completed IHSAA physical form turned in by Aug. 3.

Registration underway for flag football tourney

The Columbus Flag Football League Summer 2016 Tournament will be Aug. 6 at the PAAL fields. Games begin at 9 a.m.

Men will play 7 on 7 and have a maximum roster of 14, and women will play 4 on 4 and have a maximum roster of eight. Cost per player is $25 for men and $15 for women. Commissioner Larry Anthony is asking that each men’s team pay a minimum of five player fees and each women’s team pay a minimum of four player fees by Aug. 1.

First Tee to host golf scramble at Harrison Lake

The First Tee of Indiana-Columbus Chapter will host a golf scramble at 1 p.m. Aug. 5 at Harrison Lake Country Club.

Cost is $125 per player. Sponsorships also are available. Proceeds will benefit The First Tee of Indiana-Columbus Chapter.

Legends golf outing to benefit all-star game

Aug. 12 is the deadline to register for The Legends of Indiana Basketball Golf Classic, which will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and legends will sign autographs from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Cost is $125 per player or $500 per team and includes greens fees, a cart, lunch, dinner, prizes and silent and live auctions. Proceeds benefit The Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic.

Baseball players can register for fall league

The High School Baseball Fall League, a network of wood-bat leagues in multiple states including Indiana, is open to all players who will be in high school next year. The six-week regular season will be played Sundays beginning Aug. 21.

Registration is $239 and is available until a week before the league begins. Players will receive a pro model wood birch bat, a team Dri-fit game jersey and a free college player profile.

Players can register individually and have the opportunity to enter the names of players they would like to be paired with under the “Teammate Request” section of the registration page at hsfbl.com.
