Elwood acquires Pennsylvania staffing company

Elwood Staffing, one of the 20 largest staffing agencies in the nation, has made its fifth major company acquisition since 2013 as it moves closer to $1 billion in annual revenue.

Columbus-based Elwood announced Tuesday that it was acquiring Berks & Beyond Employment Services, Inc., based in Pennsylvania.

With the acquisition, Elwood Staffing is expecting to add an estimated $100 million in revenue, along with 4,000 temporary associates and about 100 employees, company CEO Mark S. Elwood said.

With the acquisition of Berks & Beyond, Elwood Staffing will expand to more than 250 service locations with annual revenues of about $900 million. The company employs about 25,000 temporary associates daily and partners with more than 6,000 companies annually.

Mark Elwood described his company’s latest acquisition as being on the larger end of those the company has made over the past three years. Financial details of the Berks & Beyond transaction were not released.

Elwood Staffing acquired SOS Employment group, based in Salt Lake City, in February 2013.

That purchase added more than 150 offices and about $380 million in revenue, more than doubling Elwood’s size at the time.

Earlier this year, Elwood Staffing acquired White Staffing Management, a staffing firm serving western Kentucky and Tennessee with four offices — in Bowling Green and Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and Gallatin and LaVergne, Tennessee.

In August 2015, the company purchased York Companies, Inc., a Louisville, Kentucky-based staffing firm which added $18 million to Elwood’s annual revenue.

Encore Staffing Services was acquired in July 2014, adding 12 offices in the Midwest, West Coast and Northeast.

Berks & Beyond will continue to operate under its current name and will function as a division of Elwood Staffing, the company said.

Berks & Beyond sales and service staff will remain in place, and founder and long-term company leader Chris Garner will continue to oversee local operations as regional vice president.

“The most noticeable changes stemming from this relationship will be service enhancements,” Mark Elwood said. “Employers, associates and job seekers will all benefit from Elwood’s national footprint, expert resources and broad service capabilities.”

Founded as a consulting firm in 1980 by David L. Elwood, chairman of the board, the company expanded in 1985 to provide pre-employment testing. Besides Mark S. Elwood, two of his brothers also have executive roles with the coompany, with John A. Elwood as president and Michael D. Elwood as president of Elwood Professional.
