Lura Mae (Bayless) Schoettmer Conger, 89, of Franklin, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Franciscan St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born May 26, 1927, in Greensburg, Indiana, to Claudis Earl Bayless and Leota Pearl (Hart) Bayless. She married Lawrence B. “Larry” Schoettmer on April 6, 1947, at First Christian Church in Greensburg, Indiana. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2014. She then married Robert D. Conger on January 25, 2015, at the Indiana Masonic Home. He survives.

She was a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1969 and her Master of Science Degree in Education in 1971. She had been an elementary educator for the Franklin Community School Corporation, having taught from 1969 to 1971 at Southside Elementary School and from 1971 until her retirement in 1994 at Northwood Elementary School.

She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, National Educators Association, Johnson County Retired Teachers Association and was an alumni of Leadership Johnson County. She was a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star and member of Ransford Chapter  No. 605 and Franklin Chapter No. 439. She was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Greensburg and Delta Theta Tau Sorority in Columbus, Indiana. She was a member of First Christian Church in Columbus where she was a former member of the bell choir, a member of the chancel choir and past president of the women’s council. She enjoyed playing tennis.

Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Conger of Franklin, Indiana; two daughters, Mary Katherine “Kay” Rogers (David) of Franklin, Indiana, and Dr. Nancy Louise Mussler (Kurt) of Rensselaer, Indiana; six grandchildren, Anya McConnell (Clay) of Franklin, Indiana, Kyle Rogers (Katie) of Whiteland, Indiana, Afton Ault (Dennis Losey) of Princess Lakes, Indiana, Aaron Rogers of Franklin, Indiana, Bryan Bayly of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Tyler Bayly of Denver, Colorado; one great-grandchild, Haley Rogers; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence B. “Larry” Schoettmer; brothers, William Earl Bayless and Clarence Henderson Bayless; and sisters, Leota Ruth Buell, Opal Lucille Cruser and Vesta Helen Barnard.

The Reverend Cleon Wright will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Ransford Chapel of the Indiana Masonic Home, 690 South State Street in Franklin, Indiana. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8  p.m. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, where an Order of the Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time at Ransford Chapel at the Indiana Masonic Home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
