Have fun with Columbus police, fire

A Public Safety Family Fun Day is planned today at the parking lot at Lowe’s, 3500 10th St., featuring demonstrations and exhibits from Columbus police and fire departments.

The free event is from 5 to 8 p.m. and will feature officers from the police department’s specialty units, including SWAT, the bomb squad, bike patrol, the K9 units as well as police vehicles on site.

The Columbus Fire Department also will have demonstrations, including a heat stroke awareness presentation and a mock rescue at 6 p.m.

Dorel Juvenile Group of Columbus will have a car seat inspection area set up during the event.

The event will be the departments’ National Night Out event, a national program generally observed on the first Tuesday of August as a community-building campaign to promote police and community partnerships and safe neighborhoods.

It is being conducted locally on the weekend as the first day of school for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. is Wednesday.
