Bartholomew County Humane Society celebrated its 40th birthday with the organization’s first citywide bash, featuring a silent auction and an hors d’oeuvre buffet fundraiser.

Quick-thinking neighbors with water hoses prevented a family’s mobile home on Jonesville Road from being consumed by flames before East Columbus Volunteer Fire Department personnel arrived to take over.

The livestock auction following the 4-H Fair raised $15,888, with Irwin Union Bank and Trust being the biggest buyer.
