Gov. Evan Bayh asked federal officials to declare 38 counties — including Bartholomew, Jackson, Jennings and Decatur — disaster areas because of drought damage to forage and feed crops, making farmers eligible for assistance from the Farmers Home Administration and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

Some local youths who were former fans of the Beatles joined others around the country in demonstrating against the band after John Lennon was quoted as saying the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus.”
