Charlie Smith, 77, of Columbus, died at 3:55 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Charlie was born August 18, 1938, in Wentz, Kentucky, the son of Bob and Bertha Shepherd Smith. He married Serena E. Day March 6, 1962.

Charlie had been employed at Stewart-Warner in Indianapolis for many years and Reliance Electric in Columbus. He was a member of Elizabethtown Christian Church. Charlie proudly served his country in the Marine Corps.

He loved woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Shane.

The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Doran Chambers officiating. Calling will be from 4 p.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2016, at Miles Family Cemetery, Whitesburg, Kentucky.

Memorial donations may be made to Elizabethtown Christian Church through the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Serena; daughter, Kimberly (Kenny) Lakins of Scipio; one grandchild, Shane Lakins of Scipio; brothers and sisters-in-law, R.D. (Karen) Day of Portsmouth, Virginia, Pryor (Maria) Day of Holland, Texas, Wayne (Charlett) McDougal of Whitesburg, Kentucky, Jean Day of Columbus and Jeri Day Wright of Columbus; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Smith and James Smith; and a sister, Drucilla Smith.
