Twelve-year-old Jedediah McClure, a Boy Scout and carrier for The Republic, was credited with pulling 3-year-old Stanley Richardson to safety after the youngster fell off a dock into a lake at Ceraland.

Because of the military build-up in Vietnam, the largest local Selective Service induction call since 1948, the Korean War era, was issued, with 32 area men to enter armed service as of Sept. 14.
