Robert Hedger, 87, of Columbus, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2016.

Born in Columbus Nov. 11, 1928, Robert was the son of Glen and Nellie Millholland Hedger and they preceded him in death. He was raised in Columbus and attended public schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 during World War II at the age of 17 and served until 1949.

Upon returning to Columbus after his service in the Navy, he worked for Cummins Engine Company. When the Korean War began he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950 and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in combat. He rose to the rank of Staff Sargeant before he was discharged in 1954 when he met and married Alma Johnson here in Columbus. He worked in the concrete construction business for his father, Glen, until he started his own business, Hedger Construction Inc., in 1967, installing concrete streets and curbing.

Robert is survived by his wife, Alma, of Columbus; three children, Robert (Cindy) Hedger of Columbus, Mike (Paula) Hedger of Greensburg and Edwina Hedger of Columbus; 10 grandchildren, Sarah Hedger, Robert Hedger, Elaine Sefchek, Megan Hedger, Candace Hedger and Dustin Renner, all of Columbus, Samuel Renner of Nashville, Tennessee, Michael Hedger, Elizabeth Hedger and Eric Hedger, all of Greensburg; and five great-grandchildren, Diesel Craig, London Craig, Gatlin Day, Bentley Sefchek and Tatum Sefchek.

In keeping with Robert’s wishes, a private family service will be held at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street. Private Entombment with military rites will be later at Garland Brook Cemetery.
