Richard O’Bryan

Richard B. (Dick) O’Bryan, known as “Doc” by family and friends, passed away at Drake Hospice Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 26, 2016. He was born in Columbus in 1923, son of Joseph (Jack) O’Bryan and Mary Richard O’Bryan.

He was a graduate of Columbus High School and Indiana University School of Medicine with a doctorate in pediatrics. After serving as a captain in the U.S. Army in WWII, he returned to Columbus and practiced pediatrics from 1953 until he retired in 1981 and moved to Sarasota Florida.

He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Columbus Elks Club, Harrison Lake Country Club and the American Medical Association. Doc loved to travel, play golf and create portraits of his favorite thoroughbred horses. He was also skilled in calligraphy and hand‐lettered many of the diplomas for students graduating from Columbus High School during the years he attended there.

He is survived by four children, Patti Fleming, Jack (Joanne) O’Bryan, Michael O’Bryan and Steve (Jenny) O’Bryan; six grandchildren, Anne O’Bryan, Meg O’Bryan, Daniel O’Bryan, Jill O’Bryan, Justin (Coleen) Fleming, Kaitlin (Jason) Crockett; and three great‐grandchildren, Arlynn Fleming, Maks Fleming and Ryan Crockett.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice O’Bryan.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at Our Lady of Province Church in Brownstown with a brief calling at 10 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Following the burial, an “Irish celebration of life” open house will be held at 2 p.m. at the home of Patti Fleming at 5708 W. State Road 46, Columbus.
