Phyllis Arlene Spurgin, 88, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away Thursday evening in the company of her family after a brief battle with cancer.

Born to the late George and Frances Torrenga in Lafayette, Indiana, Sept. 7, 1927, Phyllis was the middle child of three girls. Phyllis became a surgical nurse, and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

Mrs. Spurgin was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed bible studies and was an avid Bridge player.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Robert Spurgin, who was always her best friend and biggest supporter. Phyllis is also survived by her daughter, Judith (Spurgin) Reasoner, who Phyllis admired for her outgoing nature and confidence. Her older sister, Betty Koegler survives, and will lovingly remember Phyllis. Phyllis also leaves behind two granddaughters, Katee Schrage and Kelly Reasoner-Denmark; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Herbertz, Luke Schrage and Norah Schrage.

She was preceded in death by her youngest sister, Patricia Taggart.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Justin White officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum.
