Rocky Ford closing today as construction begins

Columbus will close Rocky Ford Road between Taylor and Talley roads this morning to begin construction on the latest phase or road improvement.

Milestone Contractors will begin the work at 9 a.m. by working on new underground storm sewers and water mains in the area, city officials said.

Rocky Ford Road will be closed to all traffic between Talley Road and Virginia Street, while the section between Taylor Road and Carolina Street will be closed to through traffic but remain open to residents who live along the road.

Later this fall, Milestone will begin replacing the bridge over Sloan Branch, with that section of roadway expected to reopen in early 2017.

Rocky Ford Road is a major east-west roadway through the northern section of Columbus. The city has completed improving two other sections of Rocky Ford Road from Central Avenue to Taylor Road.

The improvements planned for the latest work including adding one lane in each direction, adding two-way left-turn lanes, bicycle lanes, sidewalks and installing storm sewers, along with the Sloan Branch bridge replacement.

The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2017, city officials said.
