NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A 38-year-old man has died following a five-car crash on a Connecticut highway.

State Police say Joel Gemme, of Enfield, was driving a box truck that struck two vehicles before crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer. A wheel flew off Gemme’s truck in the crash and struck a fifth vehicle.

The crash happened at about 3:50 a.m. Thursday morning on Interstate 91 near Exit 4 in New Haven.

Gemme was pronounced dead at the scene. Drivers of two of the other vehicles were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The crash shut down parts of the highway and snarled traffic for hours until it was cleared at about 8 a.m. Police say the incident is still under investigation.
