SALEM, Mass. — A former Lowell police officer charged with driving drunk and causing a fatal crash two years ago is headed to trial in October.

The Sun ( ) reports that a judge has scheduled Eric Wayne’s trial to start Oct. 4.

The 42-year-old Wayne is charged with manslaughter by motor vehicle, motor vehicle homicide with operating under the influence, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the August 2014 head-on crash in Methuen that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Bryant Paula, of Lawrence, and seriously injured his sister

Wayne resigned after almost two decades as an officer soon after he was indicted. He is free on $85,000 bail.

His lawyer says some witnesses at the scene of the crash said that Wayne did not appear drunk.
