WEATHERSFIELD, Vt. — Vermont State Police say a New Jersey man is dead and his wife was injured after their vehicle caught fire following a crash along Interstate 91 in Weathersfield.

Seventy-nine-year-old Alexander Romanow was pronounced dead at the scene near mile marker 49N following Sunday morning’s accident. His wife, 75-year-old Jane Romanow, was hospitalized after suffering a broken femur and chest injury.

State police say the Brick, New Jersey couple had been traveling along the highway when their Chevrolet Tahoe veered into the median and struck several trees.

The impact ignited the vehicle, and Alexander Romanow was trapped inside. His wife was able to free herself despite her injuries.

An investigation is ongoing, but authorities believe Alexander Romanow may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
