PHOENIX — The Republican primary in Arizona’s 5th Congressional District remains too close to call and it will likely be later in the week before additional results make the winner clear.

Front-runner Christine Jones was just 876 votes ahead of Senate President Andy Biggs Wednesday afternoon. The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office doesn’t plan to count any of the approximately 91,000 remaining ballots across the county until Thursday.

It’s unknown how many come from 5th District, although it likely tops 10,000.

Former Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley and state Rep. Justin Olson are well behind.

The primary winner in the heavily Republican district will almost certainly be the next congressman representing Gilbert, Queen Creek and parts of Chandler and Mesa southeast of Phoenix.

Incumbent Matt Salmon is retiring and endorsed Biggs.
