DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. — Forecasters say Alabama’s coast should receive only a glancing blow from Tropical Storm Hermine, but officials are still taking precautions.

Authorities say Dauphin Island could see some minor flooding because of the storm, and the town is temporarily closing its west end beach as a precaution.

Forecasters are warning of dangerous rip currents from the storm as far west as Alabama. But a few surfers were out on public beaches at Gulf Shores trying to take advantage of the larger-than-normal surf Thursday morning.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Florida’s Big Bend from the Suwannee River to Mexico Beach. The National Hurricane Center says Hermine is expected to be a hurricane when it makes landfall in Florida late Thursday or early Friday.
