LINDEN, N.J. — A New Jersey police department is getting its first black police chief.

Linden officials will swear in 47-year-old Jonathan Parham on Thursday.

Mayor Derek Armstead tells MyCentralJersey.com (http://mycj.co/2bVHb0g ) the nearly 25-year veteran is the most qualified person to lead the department based on his experience and credentials.

Parham says he’s honored to be chosen for the post and says he realizes that the position could inspire African-American children to become police officers.

Parham is a graduate of West Point Command and Leadership School, has conducted law-enforcement training in other counties and has served as the accreditation manager for the department.
