FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A 65-year-old man has died after being struck by a train in Flagstaff.

Police say the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday at Fanning Drive and Steve’s Boulevard.

Witnesses called 911 and attempted to revive Lloyd Begay.

But he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Cory Runge says Begay, of Leupp, walked toward the tracks despite emergency warning gates being down and warning lights flashing.

Witnesses say Begay had his head down while walking in front of the train, which had sounded its horn.

Police did not say if Begay was acting deliberately.

The investigation is still ongoing.

The train is expected to be grounded into the evening hours.

Police say motorists should find an alternate route to avoid the area.
