FESTUS, Mo. — An eastern Missouri high school student has been suspended after holding up a sign for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at a pep assembly.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2bXAtob ) reports that Festus Superintendent Link Luttrell said the discipline had nothing to do with the content of the sign, which was held up last week.

Luttrell says there’s no school rule about holding up particular signs, but students generally cannot have items at school events or in class that are “unnecessary and could distract from the current environment.”

Luttrell says that the discipline wasn’t “an instance where anyone’s freedom to express was violated at all.” He says that “there’s a proper place for anything.”
