BISMARCK, N.D. — A troubled Bismarck day care center has suddenly closed after numerous complaints and a decision by the state to revoke its license.
Since Discovery Childcare Center opened in March 2015, Burleigh County Social Services received 20 complaints about the facility, including a lack of supervision, toileting practices for children, derogatory remarks made to children and inadequate food service.
The state Human Services Department notified the center June 27 that it was revoking its license.
County child care licensors continued to monitor the facility after the notice was issued, and more concerns surfaced. On July 29, an amended revocation notice was sent to the facility. The following day, a letter was sent to parents of the children registered at the day care center informing them its license was being revoked.
The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2bVzfaZ ) the center appealed the action, but Rebecca Eberhardt, an early childhood services administrator for the Department of Human Services, confirmed that the facility has shut down.
Owner Danny Zimmerman left a note on the center’s door saying it was closing effective immediately due to new state regulations and clients not keeping up with their outstanding balances. He didn’t respond to the newspaper’s requests for comment.
Zimmerman also owns a day care in neighboring Mandan that remains in operation.
