GREENSBORO, N.C. — Authorities have charged a man with killing his girlfriend almost three months ago even though her body has not been found.

Greensboro police said in a news release that 25-year-old Desmond Pendergrass was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder.

Investigators say Pendergrass killed 26-year-old Cree Smith not long after she was last seen in June. They say the couple had a fight just before she died.

Smith was not reported missing for a month, but police say her family thought she had moved somewhere else.

Police say they are still searching for Smith’s body. They won’t talk about the evidence that led them to charge Pendergrass.

Pendergrass remains in jail. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
