NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities have captured a man who they say drove off after he fatally struck a woman as she tried to cross a street in Newark.

Essex County prosecutors say Mauricio Silvera is charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle incident involving a death. Bail was set at $150,000 for the 23-year-old Elizabeth man and it wasn’t known if he has retained an attorney.

Prosecutors say a car struck 25-year-old Christina Cassidy, of Jersey City, around 3:25 a.m. Saturday in the area of McCarter Highway and Raymond Boulevard. She was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later.

Authorities have not provided details on what led to Silvera’s capture.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
