PHOENIX — The Latest on Labor Day holiday traffic in Arizona (all times local):

4:30 p.m.

Multiple Arizona highways are experiencing traffic backups and slowing as large numbers of travelers head to the Phoenix area late Monday afternoon at the end of the Labor Day weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says southbound Interstate 17 has slowing on the climb out of the Verde Valley, through Black Canyon City and elsewhere.

State 87 has slowing entering Fountain Hills on the northeastern edge of the metro area, and there are major delays on State Route 60 between Payson and Kohls Ranch.

In northwestern Arizona, there’s a backup of traffic from Las Vegas on U.S. 93 approaching Interstate 40 in Kingman.

There’s a miles-long backup on eastbound Interstate 10 west of the Phoenix area due to a crash.

Northbound Interstate 17 has reopened near Black Canyon City after being closed briefly because of a vehicle fire.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the reopening at milepost 250 began with the left traffic lane.

Southbound I-17 remains open but is heavily congested.

Traffic is backing up on Arizona highways as people return to desert cities from the high country.

In eastern Arizona, the Department of Transportation report that the backup on State Route 260 east of Payson was close to five miles west of Kohl’s Ranch.

On Interstate 17, the main route between Flagstaff and the Phoenix area, ADOT reported southbound backups north of Black Canyon and also at Cordes Junction and Camp Verde.
