COTTAGEVILLE, S.C. — Authorities say a man trying to remove a tree that fell on a South Carolina highway during Tropical Storm Hermine was struck and killed by a car.

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey told media outlets that 30-year-old Michael Woodrum died at the hospital Saturday night, a day after he was hit.

Officials with the Colleton County Rescue Squad say Woodrum was trying to get the tree off of U.S. Highway 17-A near Cottageville around 8 p.m. Friday when a Mercedes struck him and the tree.

Troopers are still investigating the wreck, and no charges have been filed.
