AZTEC, N.M. — San Juan County authorities say a 4-year-old girl who fell into the Animas River north of Aztec on Monday has died, presumably from drowning.

Sheriff’s Lt. Kyle Lincoln says the crew of the Sheriff’s Office helicopter spotted the girl, landed and started CPR, but Lincoln says the child was pronounced dead at the Farmington hospital.

The girl was identified as 4-year-old Emily Winer of Aztec.

Lincoln says officials suspect the girl drowned but are awaiting autopsy results.

Lincoln says sheriff’s personnel were told the girl was playing with family members when she slipped and fell into the river and that she didn’t resurface after going into the water.
