WEST BABYLON, N.Y. — Police say a man has been airlifted to a hospital after one of his venomous snakes bit him at his Long Island home.

Police say the 33-year-old man was bitten by an Egyptian Saw-Scaled Viper Monday night in West Babylon.

Bites from that snake can cause moderate to severe envenoming and can be life-threatening if not treated swiftly.

The man apparently had been handling the snake when it bit him. He owns five other venomous snakes as well.

A Suffolk County police helicopter airlifted him to a hospital in the Bronx. His condition wasn’t immediately known.

The snake is typically found in semi-deserts and dry savannas in Africa and the Middle East.

Police say the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been alerted.
