PHOENIX — Phoenix police say officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man to protect themselves.
Sgt. Jonathan Howard says the shooting occurred Tuesday night after a woman called police to report that her adult son was threatening people in a nearby apartment.
Police identified the son as 25-year-old Dylan Papa.
Howard says Papa was named on an outstanding felony arrest warrant and that responding officers tried for an hour to get Papa to come out of the apartment so they could detain him.
Howard says Papa eventually came out with a large hunting-style knife tethered to his hand and charged officers who shot him after failing to stop him by firing stun bag rounds.
The incident occurred near North 37th Street and East Thomas Road.
