ATLANTA — A man shot himself in the head in a vehicle along Interstate 85 near Atlanta’s airport and a woman in the vehicle also suffered a gunshot wound, police said Wednesday.
A Georgia Department of Transportation Highway Emergency Response Operator, or HERO, driver stopped to check on a vehicle sitting in the interstate’s emergency lane Wednesday morning. The HERO driver approached and saw a man and a woman in the vehicle who appeared to be injured and saw a weapon in the woman’s hand, Atlanta police spokesman Lukasz Sajdak said in an emailed statement.
The HERO driver backed away and then saw the man in the vehicle shoot himself in the head, Sajdak said.
The man died at the scene, Sajdak said. The woman, who was also shot in the head, was taken to a hospital.
Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office investigator Clint Harbin identified the man as 56-year-old Andre Cambrice. Sajdak declined to release the woman’s name.
Police said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the man shot the woman or whether the woman shot herself.
Local news media report several lanes of the busy interstate were closed about 2 miles north of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Wednesday morning while police investigated.
