City resident dies after ATV accident

A local man has died from injuries resulting from a weekend off-road-vehicle crash in Ripley County.

The death of Thomas J. Johnson, 51, of Columbus, is the 16th so far this year in Indiana as a result of an off-road-vehicle crash, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Johnson was pinned under his Arctic Cat 500 all-terrain vehicle at 5:35 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of County Road West in Holton, just east of Jennings County, where first responders administered CPR, the DNR said in a media release. Johnson had been found unresponsive by other riders, the DNR said.

Indiana conservation officers, Ripley County Sheriff’s Department deputies and fire and emergency medical services staffers all responded to the accident.

Johnson was taken by helicopter to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:23 p.m. Monday, the DNR said.

An autopsy was planned for this week, the state agency reported.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Charlotte Johnson.
