It might be understandable to think that the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s new world-class Shigeru Kawai Concert Grand Piano could upstage keyboardist Sean Chen at the opening concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Judson Erne Auditorium, 1400 25th St. But remember that Chen is performing Sergei Rachmaninoff’s challenging “Piano Concerto No. 3,” which promises to highlight his quickness and giftedness on the bench. Which, in turn, promises to highlight the instrument. So a nice win-win, yes? Information and tickets: 812-376-2638 or thecip.org.

Popular singer Jamaal Combs’ recent, sudden death has generated an outpouring of love, especially among those in the local karaoke community. Local group Lei’gacy, which sang with Combs a few times, will host a concert from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 10 to help Combs’ family defray funeral and burial expenses. The event will be outdoors at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 930 Washington St. in Columbus. Donations of any amount will be accepted.
