Local residents are invited to pay tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in two remembrance ceremonies Sunday.
The city of Columbus will remember the 15th anniversary of the attacks with a ceremony at 8:40 a.m. Sunday at Columbus City Hall, scheduled to last about 30 minutes.
The ceremony starts at that time so a special tribute can be made at 8:46 a.m., the exact time of the first attack on the World Trade Center.
Central Middle School eighth grade students placed 2,977 flags on the Columbus City Hall front lawn Thursday, one for each victim in attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the passengers and crew of Flight 93 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The ceremony will include a broadcast dispatch tribute to recognize first responders and citizens who lost their lives in the attacks. Columbus firefighters and Columbus Police Department color guard members will participate in the ceremony.
In addition to the city ceremony, the Moose Lodge, 330 Eighth St., Columbus, will have a remembrance ceremony open to the public at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Speakers will include first responders from the community.
