TRENTON, N.J. — A former sheriff’s officer in New Jersey faces jail for unlawfully providing a newspaper with arrest photos of a juvenile who was shot by police.

A judge on Friday ordered 37-year-old Christopher McKenna of Hamilton to serve 364 days in the country jail after he completes two years’ probation. The jail term may be suspended if he successfully completes probation.

McKenna admitted he accessed a restricted law enforcement database to obtain the photos when he was a Mercer County sheriff’s officer and turned them over to The Trentonian newspaper, which published them and the name of the teen. State law prohibits police from disclosing juvenile court records.

Prosecutors said the teen was wounded after he pointed a gun at police in August 2015. He pleaded guilty to a weapons charge.
