BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A Birmingham man pleaded guilty to felony murder and received a life sentence for the stabbing death of a 71-year-old woman. ( ) reports 45-year-old Gustavious Brown was facing capital murder charges for killing Linda Allbritton of Avondale. Her body was found in her house on Aug. 31, 2014.

Brown could have faced a death sentence if convicted at trial. Brown now could be eligible for parole. He pleaded guilty Monday.

Police have said that Allbritton’s death was related to a robbery in order to pay for a one-week crack binge by Brown and his roommate, Jeffery Justice.

In August 2015 three capital murder charges were dismissed against Justice who also was originally charged in Allbritton’s death, after prosecutors received DNA results that could not link him to the crime.

The DNA did link Brown.
