TUCSON, Ariz. — A man convicted of murder in the disappearance of a polio-stricken Sunday school teacher in Tucson eight years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.
Luis Vargas was sentenced Monday.
Last month, a Pima County Superior Court jury found Vargas guilty of murder, arson, theft and kidnapping.
Prosecutors tied surveillance video and Vargas’ fingerprints to the disappearance and murder of 62-year-old Kay Read, whose body has yet to be found.
Read’s sister begged Vargas to tell authorities where the body is located.
Defense lawyers insist someone else committed the crime and prosecutors didn’t prove their case.
Read went missing from her home on Tucson’s southeast side on Feb. 15, 2008.
Authorities say she Read had polio and used crutches and she allowed Vargas into her home before being kidnapped.
