DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police say a driver will face a vehicular homicide charge for the death of a 12-year-old who was injured in a three-vehicle crash.

A news release Monday said 18-year-old Fernando Lopez Aguilar was charged with three counts of serious injury by reckless driving and that one of them will be amended to homicide because of the death of Lea Phann. The girl and her 7-year-old sister, Khloey, were among five people injured Thursday. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment for Lopez Aguilar.

Police say investigators suspect he was speeding westbound when he ran a stop sign and hit a northbound pickup, which was knocked into a southbound sport utility vehicle.

Police say the girls’ grandfather, Sos Phann, remains hospitalized.
