FREEPORT, Maine — After 15 years of patriotic displays honoring America, Maine’s famed Freeport Flag Ladies say they will no longer continue their annual Sept. 11 memorial wave.

WCSH-TV reports ( ) the Flag Ladies have gathered to wave American flags on the streets of Freeport every Tuesday and every Sept. 11 since the attacks.

While the group has decided to retire their 9/11 remembrance, they plan to continue their weekly flag waving each Tuesday as well as various other appearances around the state.

The Flag Ladies started out as a way to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11 and grew to become a unique showing of patriotism and solidarity.

Several supporters, including Sen. Susan Collins, joined the Flag Ladies for their final 9/11 wave on Sunday.
