WASHINGTON, Pa. — State police have identified a western Pennsylvania man found fatally shot at his home, where it appears someone tried to set fire to the residence using a flare.

Canton Township Assistant Fire Chief Chuck LaBella says the fire burned out before crews arrived Monday and found the victim, later identified by police as 57-year-old Scott Taneyhill.

Neighbors heard gunshots just after 6 a.m. Monday and reported seeing smoke shortly before investigators found Taneyhill shot several times just outside the exterior basement door.

Taneyhill’s wife had just left the residence with their young granddaughter, though Taneyhill’s daughter and her male partner were home and awakened by the gunshots.

Police didn’t release any information on suspects or a possible motive.
