CORNWALL, Vt. — Vermont State Police and the state Division of Fire Safety are investigating a fire that seriously damaged an historic covered bridge this weekend.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Station Covered Bridge on the Cornwall-Salisbury town line around 2:50 p.m. Saturday following reports that the span was fully engulfed.

State Police Detective Lt. Reg Trayah said Monday that investigators do not believe that this was a malicious event. Police are still looking into what caused the blaze.

Cornwall Fire Chief Dennis Rheaume says flames from the burning single-lane span spread to nearby swamp lands, scorching approximately 15 acres before the blaze was extinguished.

The bridge, which was built in 1865, passes over Otter Creek to connect the two Addison County towns.
