PHOENIX — The Phoenix police chief says he hopes a serial killer who has been stalking predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods will be caught before he retires next month.

KTAR-FM reports ( ) that authorities by late August had received more than 1,500 tips and that Chief Joe Yahner is set to retire Oct. 28.

Dubbed the “Serial Street Shooter,” by police, the gunman is suspected of killing seven and wounding two in nine drive-by attacks since March. Most of the incidents took place at night as victims were standing or sitting in a car outside a home.

Police are asking that anyone with information to contact Silent Witness.
