RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — A Nassau County police officer faces assault charges following a confrontation at a bar which resulted in a 42-year-old man dying in police custody.

Prosecutors say 55-year-old Karl Snelders, of Port Jefferson Station, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday in connection with the death of Michael Murphy, of Rocky Point.

Another man, 53-year-old Scott Loeser, also pleaded not guilty to assault and attempted assault.

The two men were involved in a confrontation with Murphy at the Rocky Point Ale House last October. Snelders was off-duty at the time. Prosecutors say Murphy brandished a knife.

Murphy died in an ambulance of cardiac arrest. The medical examiner said he suffered from obesity, heart disease and asthma, conditions that contributed to his death.

Snelders has been suspended without pay.
