AMARILLO, Texas — The interim police chief in Amarillo has accepted the permanent job even though he never applied for the position.

Chief Ed Drain will drop the interim title in October. The ex-assistant police chief in Plano in June became interim police chief in Amarillo following the retirement of Chief Robert Taylor.

Interim City Manager Terry Childers on Monday announced Drain agreed to be police chief.

City officials in August hired KRW Associates to help find a new Amarillo police chief. The consulting firm, with a more than $28,000 contract, helped with the process that attracted 22 applicants.

Childers says only a few met the minimum requirements and none had the level of quality or experience shown by Drain. Childers says he never interviewed any applicants and instead offered Drain the job.
